Myths and legends on Dartmoor take on a new meaning when the mists descend !
However unbelievable the many myths and legends told about
Dartmoor
seem, there is no doubt that if you are ever caught out one dark night on the high moor, with the mist enveloping all around, leaving just the shadowed outline of the trees and rocks for company, take my word for it, you will discover the power of imagination !! This is what makes Dartmoor so mystical. Geography, climate and the human mind have combined to create something so very unique. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle knew this when he came here and began to write "The Hound of the Baskervilles" while staying at the Duchy Hotel (now the High Moorland Visitors Centre) in
Princetown
. He weaved Dartmoor folklore, place names and landmarks into the story - for instance, Foxtor mires and Grimspound became the treacherous Grimpen Mire in his intriguing mystery adventure.
